BREAKING: Sad Monday as Former MP Dies While Receiving Treatment at Nairobi Hospital

Former Alego Usonga Member of Parliament Otieno Mak’Onyango has died while receiving treatment at a Nairobi hospital, marking the end of a career that spanned journalism and politics.

The former lawmaker’s death was announced by the current Alego Usonga MP, Sam Atandi, who expressed sorrow following the loss of his predecessor.Atandi confirmed that Mak’Onyango died while receiving medical care at a hospital in Nairobi. He mourned the former legislator and wished him eternal rest.

However, the cause of death and further details about his medical condition had not been disclosed by the time of publication.

Mak’Onyango made his biggest political breakthrough during the 1992 General Election, when he defeated a long-serving legislator to become the MP for Alego Usonga in Siaya County.

He unseated Peter Oloo Aringo, who had represented the constituency since 1974.

The victory brought Aringo’s 18-year parliamentary career in the constituency to an end and marked a significant shift in local political leadership. However, Mak’Onyango’s tenure was short-lived. Aringo reclaimed the seat during the 1997 General Election and continued representing the constituency until 2002.

Before venturing into politics, Mak’Onyango had established himself in journalism.

He worked for the East African Standard, which is currently known as The Standard newspaper.

His time in the media coincided with a turbulent period in Kenya’s political history, particularly under the administration of former President Daniel Arap Moi.

In August 1982, Mak’Onyango was among those arrested following an unsuccessful coup attempt by Kenya Air Force personnel who sought to remove Moi’s government from power.

The failed attempt triggered widespread arrests and a government crackdown on individuals suspected of involvement in the plot.Source

Mak’Onyango later transitioned from journalism to elective politics, becoming part of a generation of Kenyans whose careers were shaped by the country’s changing political environment.

His death marks the loss of a former legislator who contributed to both the media industry and public leadership.

His political career, particularly his victory in the 1992 election, remains a notable part of Alego Usonga’s history.
