TEVETA Sponsors 16 Zambians for South Africa Apprenticeship

The Technical Education, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training Authority (TEVETA) has set aside 16 million kwacha to sponsor 16 Zambians for a four‑year apprenticeship programme in South Africa.

Speaking during a pre‑departure sensitization meeting in Lusaka, TEVETA Director General Cleophas Takaiza said the group, comprising 11 male and five female learners, will be trained in Tool, Die and Mould Making at the Production Technologies of South Africa (PTSA).

Mr. Takaiza explained that the initiative demonstrates government’s commitment to developing critical and scarce technical skills required to drive industrialization. He noted that Tool, Die and Mould Making is vital for the manufacturing sector, with applications in the automotive, packaging, and agro‑processing industries.

He added that Zambia has long relied on imported tools, making the development of local expertise essential for industrial growth. The apprenticeship will follow a 70 percent practical and 30 percent theoretical training model at PTSA, in line with Competency‑Based Education and Training reforms that emphasize workplace experience and practical competence.

TEVETA Board Chairperson Ngoza Nkwabilo said the programme is being implemented under a Memorandum of Understanding between TEVETA, the Zambia Association of Manufacturers, and the Production Technologies Association of South Africa. She stressed that the partnership focuses on strengthening tooling skills through curriculum development, trainer capacity building, and apprenticeship opportunities.

Representing the beneficiaries, Lungowe Aongola pledged to seize the opportunity by applying themselves responsibly throughout the training.
