Top 10 African Tribes That Have Produced the Most Presidents Since Independence

Published: November 4, 2026

Power in Africa has never been shared evenly. A small number of peoples have produced president after president, while some of the continent's largest groups have barely reached the top job at all. This ranking counts them. It covers every distinct person who has held presidential office in an independent African state since independence, grouped by the tribe they are publicly identified with, with ties broken by combined years in office.

The count is strict. A president who served twice counts once. A father and son count as two. Interim and acting holders who exercised presidential power count, and that rule is applied the same way to every group. Every single name below was verified against two independent sources, and every disputed attribution was left out and disclosed in the Methodology.

Key Facts

• The Hutu of Rwanda and Burundi rank first with 11 presidents since independence, more than any other African tribe.
• The Akan of Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire rank second with 10 presidents, who ruled for 74.6 combined years.
• The 10 groups in this ranking produced 67 presidents between them, with 553.1 combined years in office.
• The Malinké and Mandinka rank only seventh by count, with 5 presidents, but those five ruled for 75.6 years, longer than any other group.
• Togo's Kabyè missed the top 10 entirely with just 2 presidents, yet Gnassingbé Eyadéma and his son Faure ruled for 58.1 years combined.

The near misses matter too. Four groups finished on 4 presidents and lost the tie-break on years: the Darod of Somalia (33.1 years), the Ovambo of Namibia (27.8), the Yoruba of Nigeria and Benin (25.3) and the Hausa of Niger and Nigeria (19.3). The Chewa produced 3 presidents but 37.4 years, more time in office than two groups inside the top 10.

1. Hutu: 11 Presidents

Rwanda gave the Hutu Grégoire Kayibanda (11.0 years), Juvénal Habyarimana (20.8), the interim Théodore Sindikubwabo (0.3) and Pasteur Bizimungu (5.7). Burundi added Melchior Ndadaye (0.3), François Ngeze (days, in October 1993), Cyprien Ntaryamira (0.2), Sylvestre Ntibantunganya (1.8), Domitien Ndayizeye (2.3), Pierre Nkurunziza (14.8) and Évariste Ndayishimiye (6.4 and counting). The number is a story of churn as much as dominance: five of the eleven held office for under two years, most of them during the crises of the 1990s.

2. Akan: 10 Presidents

The Akan count spans two countries and several subgroups. Ghana contributed Kwame Nkrumah (Nzema, 5.7 years), Edward Akufo-Addo (Akuapem, 1.4), Akwasi Afrifa (Ashanti, 1.3), Ignatius Acheampong (Ashanti, 6.5), Fred Akuffo (Akuapem, 0.9), John Kufuor (Ashanti, 8.0), John Atta Mills (Fante, 3.5) and Nana Akufo-Addo (8.0). Côte d'Ivoire added two Baoulé presidents, Félix Houphouët-Boigny (33.3) and Henri Konan Bédié (6.0). Houphouët-Boigny's 33 years is the longest single presidency inside this top 10.

3. Bidhan (White Moors): 9 Presidents

Every one of Mauritania's nine heads of state since independence has been a Bidhan, or White Moor: Moktar Ould Daddah (17.6 years), Mustafa Ould Salek (0.9), Mohamed Mahmoud Ould Louly (0.6), Mohamed Khouna Ould Haidalla (4.9), Maaouya Ould Taya (20.6), Ely Ould Mohamed Vall (1.7), Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi (1.3), Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz (10.7) and Mohamed Ould Ghazouani (7.3 and counting). No other group in this ranking holds a complete monopoly over its country's presidency.

4. Fulani: 6 Presidents

The Fulani count stretches across five countries: Ahmadou Ahidjo in Cameroon (22.4 years), Shehu Shagari (4.3) and Muhammadu Buhari (9.7 across two spells) in Nigeria, Macky Sall in Senegal (12.0), Amadou Toumani Touré in Mali (11.0 across two spells) and Umaro Sissoco Embaló in Guinea-Bissau (5.7, before his removal in November 2025). Nigeria's Umaru Musa Yar'Adua is not counted: his Fulani identity is widely repeated, but documented research shows his family is patrilineally Tuareg, so he is listed as disputed in the Methodology. With him, the Fulani would stand at 7 presidents and 68.1 years.

5. Tswana: 6 Presidents

Botswana has only ever been led by Tswana presidents: Seretse Khama (13.8 years), Quett Masire (17.7), Festus Mogae (10.0), Ian Khama (10.0), Mokgweetsi Masisi (6.6) and Duma Boko (2.0 and counting). Two of the six are father and son. Unlike the Hutu count, this is a record of stability: six presidents, no coups, and an unbroken line of elections since 1966.

6. Fon: 6 Presidents

Benin's turbulent early decades produced Fon presidents at a rapid rate: Christophe Soglo (2.2 years across two spells), Jean-Baptiste Hachème (two days in December 1967), Émile Derlin Zinsou (1.4), Justin Ahomadégbé (0.4, as chairman of the rotating Presidential Council), Nicéphore Soglo (5.0) and Patrice Talon (10.6 and counting). Six presidents adding up to only 19.6 years is the fastest turnover in this ranking, and Talon alone accounts for more than half of it.

7. Malinké / Mandinka: 5 Presidents

By count the Malinké and Mandinka sit mid-table. By time in power they beat everyone: Ahmed Sékou Touré in Guinea (25.5 years), Modibo Keïta (8.2) and Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta (7.0) in Mali, Alpha Condé in Guinea (10.7) and Dawda Kairaba Jawara in The Gambia (24.2). Five men, 75.6 combined years. The Gambia's Adama Barrow is excluded as disputed: his father was Mandinka and his mother Fula, and he has publicly described himself both ways.

8. Tutsi: 5 Presidents

Burundi's three military presidents, Michel Micombero (9.9 years), Jean-Baptiste Bagaza (10.8) and Pierre Buyoya (12.7 across two spells), were all Tutsi, as was the acting president Sylvie Kinigi (0.3, in 1993 and 1994). Rwanda adds Paul Kagame, in office for 26.6 years and counting. The same interim rule that lifts the Hutu count applies here: Kinigi held presidential power, so she counts, exactly as Sindikubwabo and Ngeze do for the Hutu.

9. Hawiye: 5 Presidents

Somalia's presidency has alternated between clan families, and the Hawiye lead their Darod rivals on count. Aden Adde (6.9 years), Ali Mahdi Muhammad (5.9), Abdiqasim Salad Hassan (4.1), Sheikh Sharif Ahmed (3.6) and Hassan Sheikh Mohamud (8.9 across two spells) make five. Three of the five are Abgaal, the Hawiye sub-clan that has produced three Somali presidents on its own.

10. Mossi: 4 Presidents

The Mossi take the last top-10 place on the years tie-break: Maurice Yaméogo (5.4 years), Jean-Baptiste Ouédraogo (0.7), Blaise Compaoré (27.0) and Roch Marc Christian Kaboré (6.1). Popular lists usually credit the Mossi with far more, but the evidence does not hold. Sangoulé Lamizana was Samo, not Mossi. Thomas Sankara, whose father was of mixed Mossi and Fulani heritage and whose mother was Mossi, is classified as Silmi-Mossi in the Dictionary of African Biography and is excluded as disputed, with the reasoning set out in the Methodology.

Frequently Asked Questions

How were presidents counted for this ranking?

Each distinct person who formally held presidential office in an independent African state since independence counts once, including military heads of state and interim or acting holders who exercised presidential power. Repeat spells count once. Father and son count separately. Ties on the number of presidents are broken by combined years in office.

Why do the Hutu rank first when Rwanda and Burundi are small countries?

Because of turnover. Political crises in both countries cycled leaders quickly in the 1990s, and five of the eleven Hutu presidents served under two years. The count measures how many people reached the office, not how securely they held it. On combined years, the Hutu rank only fifth among the top 10.

Why is Thomas Sankara not counted for the Mossi?

Sankara's parentage is genuinely mixed and the reference works classify him as Silmi-Mossi, a mixed Mossi and Fulani category, rather than simply Mossi. Our rule counts a president under a group only when two independent sources support a clear attribution. Sankara fails that test, so he is disclosed here instead of counted.

Why is Nigeria, the most populous country, so low in this ranking?

Nigeria's presidency rotates among its regions by political convention, so no single group accumulates presidents. The Yoruba and the Hausa produced 4 each and missed the top 10 on the years tie-break. The Igbo produced 2 (Nnamdi Azikiwe and Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi). Population alone has never decided this count; small Mauritania, Botswana and Burundi all out-produce Nigeria's biggest groups.

Which tribe ruled longest without producing the most presidents?

The Malinké and Mandinka, whose 5 presidents ruled 75.6 years combined. The extreme case sits outside the ranking: Togo's Kabyè produced only 2 presidents, Gnassingbé Eyadéma and his son Faure, but they ruled for 58.1 years between them, longer than the Fon, Hawiye or Mossi managed with far more presidents.

Methodology

This ranking counts distinct individuals who held the office of President or head of state of an independent African state from that country's independence to November 2026, including military rulers and interim or transitional holders who exercised presidential power. A person with two spells counts once; a father and son count as two. Incumbents are counted to November 2026. Ethnic attribution follows the group the person is publicly identified with in standard references, and a name is counted only where two independent sources support the attribution. Macro-groups are counted as one people where they are commonly treated as such: the Akan including their Nzema, Akyem, Akuapem, Ashanti, Fante and Baoulé subgroups; the Malinké and Mandinka; the Bidhan of Mauritania; the Tswana of Botswana; and the Somali clan families Hawiye and Darod. Combined years are approximate, summed from each president's time in office, and break ties on equal counts.

Disputed attributions were excluded, and they are listed here so the count can be checked: Thomas Sankara (Silmi-Mossi, mixed Mossi and Fulani parentage); Adama Barrow (Mandinka father, Fula mother, publicly identified both ways); Umaru Musa Yar'Adua (widely listed as Fulani, but documented as patrilineally Tuareg); Murtala Mohammed (claimed as Hausa and as Fulani in rival Nigerian accounts); Mahamadou Tandja (mixed Fulani, Soninke and Kanuri parentage); Kenneth Kaunda (Tumbuka father from Malawi, raised among the Bemba, identified with no single group); Jerry Rawlings (Ewe mother, Scottish father); Kgalema Motlanthe (Sotho-Tswana, not Botswana Tswana); and the Bemba claims for Frederick Chiluba and Michael Sata, which Zambian historians dispute (Sata as Bisa, Chiluba as Lunda). Two cautions apply. First, sourcing strength varies: the Ghanaian, Burundian, Somali and Nigerien attributions rest on named biographical sources, while Botswana's rests partly on the structural fact that every Botswana president has been Tswana. Second, the Hutu first place depends on counting short interim holders of the 1990s; on substantive presidencies alone, the Akan would lead.
