Woman, 35, Claims Antidepressant Prozac Left Her Unable to Feel Pleasure More Than a Decade After Quitting

Katie Collingwood was 21 when she sought help from her GP during a difficult period in her life. Having recently graduated from a university course she had not enjoyed, she was grieving the suicide of a close friend and struggling to understand her sexuality.

Her appointment resulted in a prescription for fluoxetine, an antidepressant commonly known by the brand name Prozac. Although Katie says the medication initially helped ease her sadness, she soon noticed other changes that left her increasingly concerned.

Within months, she says, her emotions began to feel muted. Her sexual desire diminished, and she struggled to experience pleasure.

“I wasn’t feeling sad anymore,” she recalled. “But I wasn’t actually feeling anything.”

Katie described the experience as though both her emotional range and her sexuality had been taken away.

Sexual Problems Emerged as She Tried to Rebuild Her Relationships

The changes became more apparent when Katie attempted to return to dating and relationships after taking fluoxetine for about a year.

She says she struggled to experience attraction and did not understand why her feelings had changed so dramatically. At the time, she did not suspect that her symptoms might be connected to the antidepressant.

Katie continued taking the medication for approximately three years before stopping, as she had never intended to remain on antidepressants indefinitely.

However, the problems she had experienced while taking the drug did not disappear after she stopped using it.

Now 35 and living in the North East of England, Katie says her loss of libido, reduced emotional range and difficulty experiencing pleasure have persisted for more than a decade.

Last year, after researching her symptoms, she obtained a private diagnosis of post-SSRI sexual dysfunction, commonly known as PSSD.

PSSD Can Affect Emotions, Sexual Function and Everyday Pleasure

PSSD is a condition in which sexual symptoms associated with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) continue after a person has stopped taking the medication.

Reported symptoms can include reduced sexual desire, diminished genital sensation, difficulty reaching orgasm and problems experiencing pleasure. Some people also describe emotional numbness, cognitive difficulties and changes in their ability to connect with others.

Katie says the impact on her life extends far beyond sexual function, affecting her identity, relationships and personal development.

“The condition is bigger than just sex. It impacts a person’s entire life,” she said.

The condition has attracted debate within the medical community because the evidence remains limited and its underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. However, concerns about persistent sexual symptoms have prompted renewed attention from patients, researchers and medicines regulators.

Antidepressant Information Leaflets Set for Changes

The debate over PSSD has gained renewed attention following the announcement that patient information leaflets for certain antidepressants will be updated to include information about the possibility of sexual symptoms continuing after treatment ends.

The changes follow an extensive review initiated by health officials after concerns were raised by patients and their families about long-term side effects.

The issue affects a widely used class of medicines. According to the supplied report, nearly nine million people in Britain take antidepressants.

The planned changes represent an important development in how patients are informed about the potential risks associated with these medicines, particularly symptoms that may persist after treatment has ended.

For Katie, the possibility of long-term effects is central to her experience. She says she was not warned that sexual problems could occur, let alone that they might continue after she stopped taking the medication.

“I wasn’t warned about any of the temporary risks, never mind that this can be permanent in some people,” she said.

How SSRIs Work and Why Doctors Prescribe Them

SSRIs are among the most commonly prescribed antidepressants in the UK. Medicines in this category include fluoxetine, sertraline and citalopram.

They work by blocking the reabsorption of serotonin, a neurotransmitter involved in regulating mood and other functions in the brain. These medicines are prescribed for conditions including depression and anxiety.

For many patients, antidepressants can substantially improve symptoms and help them manage difficult periods in their lives. Their benefits are particularly important for people experiencing moderate to severe depression.

However, treatment can also cause side effects. Commonly reported problems include nausea, indigestion, headaches and difficulty sleeping. Sexual dysfunction, including reduced libido, is another recognised side effect of SSRIs.

The challenge surrounding PSSD is determining why symptoms that are known to occur during treatment sometimes appear to persist after the medication has been discontinued.

Experts Say the Causes of Persistent Symptoms Remain Unclear

Dr David Healy, a psychiatrist and founder of the drug-safety website RxISK, has written extensively about PSSD. He says sexual side effects during SSRI treatment have been recognised for decades, while the possibility that they may continue afterwards has taken much longer to gain wider recognition.

Healy explained that doctors have often assumed sexual problems would resolve once the medication had left the body. Awareness of reports involving persistent symptoms has developed more gradually.

Professor Joanna Moncrieff, a professor of psychiatry at University College London, said SSRIs are known to cause emotional numbing and sexual dysfunction during treatment, but the reasons those effects may continue in some patients remain uncertain.

She said the possibility of permanent or semi-permanent changes has been raised, but stressed that this has not been established.

Researchers have also struggled to identify reliable risk factors that would allow doctors to predict which patients might develop PSSD. Current evidence does not provide a clear set of demographic or clinical characteristics that can determine who will be affected.

Katie Says Her Symptoms Were Initially Attributed to Trauma and Low Mood

Katie believes a lack of awareness about persistent sexual side effects contributed to the time it took her to identify a possible explanation for her symptoms.

She says that when she raised concerns with doctors, her difficulties were attributed to low mood or the trauma she had experienced rather than being investigated as a potential consequence of medication.

She also says she was not given a clear solution and had to repeatedly seek referrals for different forms of therapy.

“I had to push and push for different therapies,” she said, explaining that she asked about trauma therapy and sex therapy but struggled to obtain the support she wanted.

After years without improvement, Katie began searching online for explanations and discovered information about PSSD.

Her GP referred her to a specialist, but she was told the wait would be 12 months. She therefore decided to pay for a private consultation, where she received her diagnosis.

Katie says she believes earlier discussions about possible sexual side effects could have helped her recognise the potential connection sooner.

Doctors Urge Patients to Discuss the Benefits and Risks of Treatment

Despite concerns about PSSD, medical experts stress that antidepressants remain an important treatment option for many people experiencing depression.

Professor Carmine Pariante, a spokesperson for the Royal College of Psychiatrists, said antidepressants can be effective in reducing symptoms of moderate to severe depression, particularly when combined with talking therapies.

He advised patients to discuss available treatment options, including benefits, risks and possible side effects, with a qualified healthcare professional before deciding on a course of treatment.

The advice reflects the need to consider both the potential benefits of antidepressants and the possibility of unwanted effects. Patients should be able to make informed decisions based on their individual circumstances and medical needs.

Katie, however, believes that in retrospect she might have benefited more from psychological support when she first sought help.

She says she now questions whether she needed medication at the time and wonders whether several months of therapy could have helped her address the difficulties she was facing.

Her experience highlights the importance of discussing treatment choices carefully rather than assuming one approach will suit every patient.

Some Patients Recover, but Others Report Symptoms Lasting Years

There is currently no established treatment that reliably resolves PSSD in every patient. Nevertheless, specialists report that some people experience improvement over time, including a gradual return of sexual function without a specific medical intervention.

Research cited in the supplied report suggests symptoms ease, on average, within approximately three and a half years for some patients, although recovery times vary. Other reported cases involve symptoms continuing for as long as a decade.

Potential approaches under specialist care may include targeted therapies, such as testosterone treatment in appropriate circumstances or pelvic floor physiotherapy. However, the effectiveness of these approaches for PSSD is not established for all patients, and treatment should be considered individually with a qualified clinician.

Healy said he had seen people regain sexual function years after stopping antidepressants, while emphasising the need for more research into the causes of the condition and effective treatments.

Katie says she has yet to find anything that has significantly improved her symptoms. Support groups have helped her feel less isolated, but she says her physical and emotional difficulties remain.

She also avoids alcohol, caffeine and painkillers because she believes some substances can worsen her symptoms.

‘I Feel I Lost Important Years of My Life’

For Katie, the lasting effects have influenced how she sees herself and how she approaches relationships.

She says the experience has left her feeling that she missed important opportunities to explore her identity, develop relationships and experience life in the way she had expected.

“I was robbed of the chance to have normal developmental experiences and relationships, to establish my identity and experience my own life,” she said.

She describes a narrower emotional range than before taking fluoxetine and says the absence of experiences she once took for granted has become a defining part of her life.

Although she has found some comfort through support groups, she says the condition continues to affect her relationships and everyday wellbeing.

Her account comes as regulators move to provide patients with clearer information about the possibility of persistent sexual side effects. It also highlights the continuing questions surrounding PSSD, including why it develops in some people, how frequently it occurs and which treatments might help.

For Katie, the greatest wish is to return to the period before she began taking the medication. Her story underscores the importance of informed discussions about antidepressant treatment, continued medical support when side effects emerge and further research into symptoms that may persist after medication has stopped.
