CAPITOL HILL, Monrovia, October 23, 2026: The House of Representatives has summoned health authorities to appear before plenary next Tuesday to provide a comprehensive briefing on Liberia’s preparedness and preventive measures against a potential Ebola outbreak.
The decision followed a communication from Montserrado County District #16 Representative Dixon W. Seboe, expressing concern over reports of a confirmed Ebola case in Nigeria and an ongoing Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak.
Rep. Seboe cited a recent Ministry of Health directive instructing health facilities, border entry points and public institutions to strengthen screening procedures and enforce infection prevention and control measures.
“While the Ministry’s directive is an important preventive measure, the seriousness of the situation requires the Legislature to obtain detailed information regarding the country’s level of preparedness, the availability of essential medical supplies, and the capacity of our health institutions to respond effectively to any potential public health emergency,” he said.
The lawmaker requested that the Minister of Health brief the House on the government’s Ebola preparedness strategy, emergency response arrangements and coordination with regional and international health authorities.
He also called on the Director-General of the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) to provide updates on disease surveillance, laboratory testing capacity and emergency response mechanisms.
Seboe further requested information on measures being implemented to protect schools, markets, government institutions and other public facilities.
According to him, the briefing should establish whether Liberia has adequate emergency funding, medical equipment, trained healthcare personnel and logistical support to respond promptly to any suspected Ebola case.
He emphasized the Legislature’s oversight responsibility to ensure that public health authorities take necessary precautions to protect citizens against potential disease outbreaks.
