Russian attack hits Kyiv medical centers, leaving one person dead
Kyiv was rocked by another Russian strike overnight, leaving one person dead and eight injured and damaging medical facilities and a university dormitory, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said.
The assault comes as Russia has stepped up drone and missile attacks across Ukraine in recent weeks, keeping the capital — home to around three million people — under near-constant air-raid alerts.
In the latest barrage, medical facilities in the city were among the targets, Mr Klitschko said, reporting that a “blast wave shattered the windows in (an) intensive care unit”.
He added on social media that in another medical facility in the same district, windows were blown out in two wards. “Neither patients nor medical staff were wounded,” he said.
Elsewhere in the capital, Mr Klitschko said, a building in a non-residential area was struck. “According to preliminary reports, there is one fatality near one of the supermarkets in the area,” he added.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said it was a strike ‘directly on the city, on its infrastructure’
Mr Klitschko also said a strike near a dormitory belonging to one of Kyiv’s universities smashed windows and wounded a 20-year-old woman.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said “Russian ballistic missiles struck the grounds of a university in Kyiv and the area around it — effectively the campus, Kyoto Park, the area near a metro station, and residential buildings.”
“The missiles hit very crowded areas, and there is not a single military facility nearby. This was a strike directly on the city, on its infrastructure,” he said on social media.
The attacks came hours before a truce in the ravaged Russian-occupied city of Oleshky was expected to begin, following months of reports warning that residents were grappling with severe shortages of food, water and medicine.
Russia said yesterday it would consider more local truces for humanitarian purposes, but signalled it would not slow the broader campaign even as both sides prepare to restart stalled talks under US mediation next month.
