South African international music sensation Black Coffee is not backing down in his ongoing legal clash with luxury carmaker Maserati SA.

South African music star Black Coffee is continuing his legal battle with Maserati SA, with the dispute now moving into the enforcement stage.
A sheriff of the court has been authorised to attach and sell movable property belonging to Casa Vehicle Holdings, trading as Maserati SA, at a public auction to recover more than R7.7 million owed to Black Coffee’s company, Soulistic Music.
The dispute dates back to November 2024, when the Grammy Award-winning producer, whose real name is Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo, entered into a R16 million agreement to purchase two luxury vehicles.
While the first vehicle was delivered, the second custom-built vehicle was allegedly not delivered within the agreed timeframe.
According to court documents, Maserati SA had undertaken to deliver the second vehicle by June 2025. The vehicle was to include bespoke exterior modifications, custom interior finishes, tailored seat belts and specialised brake calipers.
Before turning to legal action, Maphumulo attempted to resolve the dispute amicably.
Correspondence between the parties showed that a Maserati employee had assured the DJ that a production slot had been secured, with the factory allegedly making a “special exception” because of his status as a globally recognised figure.
When the vehicle was not delivered, Maphumulo demanded the return of his R7 million trade-in amount.
The Johannesburg High Court subsequently granted summary judgment against Maserati SA on August 3 after the company failed to present a substantive defence.
The order required Maserati SA to repay the amount, along with legal costs.
A writ of execution issued on August 17 has now authorised the sheriff to attach and sell the carmaker’s movable assets to recover the outstanding debt.
The total amount stands at R7.725 million, comprising the R7 million judgment amount and R735,000 in interest accrued at 10.5% annually.
However, no specific vehicles or other property have been physically seized at this stage.
Black Coffee is known for his collection of high-performance and luxury vehicles, which includes a Lamborghini Urus, Ferrari 458 Speciale, McLaren GT, Bentley Flying Spur, Mercedes-AMG SLS, Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG, custom Rolls-Royce models, a 1968 Mercedes-Benz 280SL and a Maserati MC20.
