No fewer than 100 youths and women in Akoko South-East Local Government Area of Ondo State have received N10 million grants as part of efforts by the council administration to boost livelihoods and cushion the effects of economic hardship.
Each beneficiary received N100,000 at an empowerment programme, held in Isua-Akoko, last Thursday.
The beneficiaries were selected from the 11 political wards in the local government area to ensure equitable distribution of the intervention.
In a related development, the council distributed 100 bags of fertiliser to farmers in the wards to support agricultural production and reduce the burden of rising input costs.
Speaking at the event, the council chairman, Omolehin Jude Ayegbo, said the empowerment programme was designed to ensure that residents at the grassroots felt the direct impact of government.
Ayegbo said the selection of beneficiaries from the 11 wards was deliberate, stressing that fairness and inclusiveness remain central to his administration.
He urged the beneficiaries to invest the grants in productive ventures that will enable them to expand their businesses and become self-reliant.
“We want our people to feel the impact of the government directly. Which is why we ensured that beneficiaries were selected from all the 11 wards,” he said.
The chairman said the intervention was also intended to reinforce the values of equity, peace and unity, which he said the All Progressives Congress (APC) represents.

On the fertiliser distribution, Ayegbo said agriculture remains a major source of livelihood for residents of the area, adding that the council will continue to support farmers through relevant interventions.
He assured farmers that the council will collaborate with relevant agencies to introduce programmes aimed at increasing agricultural productivity and making farming more attractive to young people.
Ayegbo disclosed that the empowerment programme was only the beginning of further interventions by his administration, revealing plans to support skills acquisition and small businesses, as well as rehabilitate rural roads.
He appealed to residents to support the council’s development initiatives, saying the progress of Akoko South-East requirs the collective efforts of the government, traditional institutions, community leaders and residents.
