Is Your Money Safe? Safaricom Speaks Out After Massive M-PESA Server Crash

A chilling wave of panic has swept across Kenya as Safaricom breaks its silence following a major M-PESA crisis that left millions of users watching their funds seemingly vanish into “thin air”.

Early Wednesday morning, October 28, 2026, the country’s leading mobile money platform suffered a severe technical system glitch. The disruption caused massive friction during peak transit and business hours, sparking nationwide anxiety.

Frustrated customers flooded social media platforms with screenshots of failed transactions and empty wallets. One user voiced the fears of many, posting: “I just withdrew money from M-Shwari to M-PESA and it disappeared in thin air… I need my money!”

Apart from missing wallet balances, millions also experienced a total breakdown in standard services, including:

• Failed utility payments via PayBill and Buy Goods numbers.

• Malfunctioning mobile apps rejecting user logins.

• Massive delays in receiving standard SMS transaction confirmations.

As public outrage mounted, Safaricom issued a statement acknowledging the technical hitches. In messages sent out to affected customers in the wee hours of Wednesday, the telecom giant apologized for the severe inconvenience and confirmed that their engineers are working round the clock to rectify the system.

The company explicitly assured the public that no money has been permanently lost. According to Safaricom representatives, the disappearance of funds is a visibility issue caused by a synchronization lag between core M-PESA servers and banking partner platforms like M-Shwari.

To navigate the current outage safely and protect your cash, Safaricom Care advises the following:

1. Stop Retrying Failed Transactions: Repeatedly inputting your PIN after an error message will only clog the system queues further and may trigger double deductions once the servers stabilize.

2. Utilize Core USSD Codes: While the smartphone apps are heavily congested, the traditional *334# menu routes transactions through a different infrastructure and remains a more stable backup.

3. Keep Your Reference Texts: If you were debited for a failed transaction, preserve the partial SMS notification or transaction code. Safaricom has promised automatic rollbacks and reconciliations for all pending cash balances once normalcy is restored.
