NAIROBI, Kenya Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has said buildings in the city’s Central Business District (CBD) could rise to 70 floors provided developers meet specific conditions before receiving approval.
In a statement shared by Kenyans.co.ke on October 28, 2026 Sakaja explained that permission to construct high rise buildings depends on meeting the required standards.
His remarks come as Nairobi experiences growing demand for housing, office space and commercial property. The city continues to expand increasing pressure on available land and encouraging developers to consider taller buildings.
However Sakaja stressed that developers cannot simply construct skyscrapers without meeting the necessary requirements. Building approvals depend on applicable planning rules and other conditions governing construction.
These include structural safety, water supply, drainage, sewer systems and road access. Such services are important to ensure that new developments can support residents, workers and businesses safely.
The discussion about building heights has also drawn attention to construction safety following recent concerns over building collapses and compliance with regulations in Nairobi.
Authorities have repeatedly faced questions about whether developers follow approved plans and whether buildings undergo proper inspections before and during construction.
Sakaja remarks highlight the importance of meeting the required standards before undertaking major projects.
Although the possibility of 70-storey buildings could reshape Nairobi’s skyline the proposed height does not mean every location automatically qualifies for such developments.
For developers and property investors, the message is clear: **meeting planning and safety requirements remains essential before construction begins.
