Dennis Miracles: NDC Has Always Been An Enabler Of Galamsey Since 2009

The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of contributing to the persistence of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, in Ghana since 2009.

Speaking during an interview on Joy News on Saturday, October 31, 2026, Aboagye argued that the NDC should accept responsibility for its record in addressing illegal mining rather than distancing itself from the environmental crisis.

He maintained that galamsey has been a longstanding national problem and suggested that decisions made by successive governments have contributed to the conditions that allow illegal mining to continue.

His comments have added to the ongoing political disagreements between the NPP and NDC over their respective records in tackling the menace.

Galamsey remains a major concern in Ghana because of its impact on forest reserves, rivers, agricultural lands and surrounding communities. Illegal mining activities have been associated with water pollution, deforestation and widespread land degradation.

Environmental organisations, traditional authorities and civil society groups have continued to call for stronger government action, improved enforcement of mining regulations and accountability for those involved.

Aboagye’s accusation has placed renewed attention on the NDC’s record during its periods in government since 2009. It also reflects the continuing political exchanges between the two major parties over responsibility for the country’s illegal mining crisis.

However, the allegation represents Aboagye’s position as an NPP communicator, and the specific evidence supporting his claim was not detailed in the statement provided.

As political discussions continue, the challenge remains finding a lasting national solution that protects Ghana’s natural resources, ensures consistent enforcement of the law and holds individuals accountable regardless of their political affiliations.
