“We See Everything Ghanaian as Sub-standard” –Yvonne Okoro bemoans lack of support for Ghanaian Films
AI summary
Over the years, several creatives in Ghana, including musicians, actors, filmmakers and even manufacturers, have spoken about the lack of support they receive from their fellow citizens despite their efforts to grow their respective industries.
Ghanaian actress and film producer Yvonne Okoro is the latest to share her views on the issue, highlighting the tendency of some Ghanaians to overlook local productions while readily embracing foreign content.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z, Yvonne said Ghanaian filmmakers often face criticism from audiences who are quick to dismiss local films but show greater appreciation for productions from other countries, even when the quality is questionable. According to her, this attitude makes it difficult for local producers to attract audiences and sustain their businesses despite their efforts to create content for the market.
“We do not support our own. Everything Ghanaian, we see it as sub-standard. And when you say this, people get offended by it, but it’s the truth,” she said.
The award-winning actress further questioned why viewers who enjoy certain foreign productions are sometimes unwilling to give Ghanaian films the same consideration. She also pointed to the popularity of Nigerian YouTube productions, arguing that some viewers readily embrace such content but are less forgiving when Ghanaian filmmakers produce work of a similar standard.
Yvonne noted that the situation can be particularly frustrating when filmmakers invest time and resources into producing quality work, only for audiences to show little interest or discover the productions much later.
Drawing from her experience promoting films, she questioned why some people only acknowledge the existence of a production after considerable marketing efforts have been made to get them to watch it.
