New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Communications Team member Kofi Tonto has criticised the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) over statements by some of its members concerning the political affiliation of newly appointed Electoral Commission (EC) Deputy Chairperson Emelia Afi Agbenyo.
Speaking on TV3’s New Day programme, Tonto questioned the credibility of NDC members who have reportedly denied that Agbenyo belongs to their party.
He accused the governing party’s members of making inconsistent statements about the issue, describing their position as evidence of what he considers a lack of credibility.
Tonto’s comments come amid growing political debate over President John Dramani Mahama’s appointment of Agbenyo as a Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission.
According to the NPP communicator, some NDC members have categorically stated that Agbenyo is not a member of their party. He challenged that position and used the opportunity to launch a strong criticism of the governing party.
Tonto went further by describing the NDC as a party whose members, in his view, lack honesty and credibility. His remarks reflect the increasingly heated exchanges between the two major political parties over the appointments.
Agbenyo’s selection has attracted criticism from the NPP, whose members have raised concerns about her alleged political connections and the implications for public confidence in the Electoral Commission.
The opposition party has formally rejected her appointment, arguing that the political background of individuals occupying senior positions at the election management body deserves scrutiny.
The NDC’s position on Agbenyo’s alleged affiliation has also become a subject of discussion, with opposition communicators questioning statements made by some party members.
However, Tonto’s allegations remain political claims and should not be treated as independently established facts without supporting evidence.
The controversy has added to broader discussions about political neutrality, public trust and the importance of maintaining confidence in Ghana’s electoral institutions.
As the debate continues, the competing claims about Agbenyo’s political background remain central to the disagreement between the NPP and the NDC over her appointment.
