FG Begins Construction of 120MVA Power Substation in Katsina

The Federal Government has commenced the construction of a 132/33kV electricity transmission substation in Mashi Local Government Area of Katsina State, designed to provide 120 megavolt-amperes (MVA) of capacity and boost electricity supply in the region.
The project, being executed by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), is scheduled for completion in March 2027. At the groundbreaking ceremony on Friday, Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe said the facility would strengthen the transmission network and improve electricity delivery to Katsina and neighbouring communities.
According to Tegbe, the substation will house two 60MVA transformers, providing a combined transmission capacity equivalent to about 96 megawatts. He explained that the project is intended to support farmers, traders, artisans, and households by enhancing infrastructure critical to economic growth and improved living standards.
“This new two-by-60MVA, 132/33kV transmission substation will strengthen the network’s ability to deliver available electricity within Katsina and its environs, supporting productive activity and household welfare,” Tegbe said, commending President Bola Tinubu for prioritizing investments in the power sector.
He assured that compensation issues had been resolved and urged contractors, engineers, and TCN officials to ensure disciplined execution and quality delivery. Tegbe also called on residents to protect the facility against vandalism, stressing that it was an asset for future generations.
Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, expressed gratitude to the President for approving three transmission substation projects for the state, describing them as vital investments in economic development. He also highlighted ongoing infrastructure projects, including the Kano–Daura–Katsina railway extension to Maradi, Niger Republic, and a proposed 10MW hybrid wind-solar power project.
The ceremony was attended by officials from the Federal Ministry of Power, TCN, Kano Electricity Distribution Company, Katsina State Government, traditional rulers, and other stakeholders.
