Tanzania claims to spend 2bn/- monthly to treat motorcycle accident victims at MOI

**DAR ES SALAAM: **THE Tanzanian government spends between Sh1.5 billion and Sh2 billion every month to cover medical treatment for some victims of motorcycle accidents, commonly known as bodaboda, at the Muhimbili Orthopaedic Institute (MOI).

The figures were provided on September 30, 2026, in Dar es Salaam by Minister for Home Affairs Patrobas Katambi, who said MOI receives between 7,000 and 9,000 patients each month requiring medical treatment.

According to Katambi, 78 percent of the patients do not have health insurance, while some have no relatives or close family members able to cover their medical expenses.

He said the situation forces the government to shoulder the cost of treatment for some of the patients, including victims of bodaboda accidents.

Katambi urged bodaboda riders to comply with road safety laws and regulations to reduce accidents, deaths and injuries affecting both riders and other road users.
