Canada Commits $684,879 to Disability Rights Projects as Inclusion Efforts Expand Nationwide

The Government of Canada has announced $684,879 in funding for seven projects designed to strengthen disability rights, inclusion and participation across the country.

The funding, announced on September 28, 2026, in Ottawa by Employment and Social Development Canada, is being delivered through the Social Development Partnerships Program – Disability Component.

The projects are intended to support Canada’s implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) by improving awareness, generating knowledge and strengthening the ability of people with disabilities and their representative organisations to participate meaningfully in the implementation process.

Projects will focus on different areas of disability rights

The seven initiatives have been selected under four funding streams, covering disability rights education, environmental and social barriers, children’s rights and youth participation.

Together, the projects will examine challenges experienced by different disability communities while developing practical resources, leadership opportunities and recommendations for more inclusive policies and services.

L’Arche Canada receives the largest individual allocation

L’Arche Canada will receive $200,000 for the CRPD Learning Exchange, a two-year project focused on developing more accessible and collaborative ways of learning about disability rights.

Rather than relying on one-off events, the initiative will develop and test facilitation methods, learning resources and shared practices.

The project will also encourage people with disabilities to take leadership roles alongside human rights practitioners, emerging leaders and other people responsible for implementing rights and policies.

National project to document experiences of multiple chemical sensitivity

The Environmental Health Association of Canada will receive $65,000 for Invisible No More, a two-year national initiative focused on multiple chemical sensitivity.

The project will establish a bilingual and accessible digital story bank featuring lived experiences from people across Canada.

Participants will be able to contribute written, audio and low-stimulus video accounts using approaches designed to give them control over how their experiences are shared.

The initiative will particularly seek to document experiences within underserved and equity-deserving communities. The information gathered will be used to identify systemic barriers and potential areas for change, alongside educational resources, an analysis report and practical guidance for more inclusive environments and services.

Indigenous disability rights placed at the centre of another project

Nunavummi Disabilities Makinnasuaqtiit Society will also receive $65,000 for Nothing About Us Without Us: Indigenous Disability Inclusion and CRPD Implementation.

The Indigenous-led national project will focus on improving the participation of Inuit, First Nations and Métis people with disabilities in disability rights and policy discussions.

Community dialogues, interviews and a national Indigenous disability rights round table will be used to document experiences of discrimination and examine gaps between Canada’s CRPD commitments and outcomes in communities.

The project will develop Indigenous-led recommendations based on lived experience, Indigenous knowledge and rights-based approaches.

Black Canadians with disabilities to have a stronger voice on economic inclusion

Ase Community Foundation for Black Canadians with Disabilities has been awarded $65,000 for the Black Disability Employment and Economic Justice Consultation Project.

The national initiative will examine employment and income-security barriers affecting Black people with disabilities.

Its work will include regional consultations, a national community of practice and a hybrid national summit. Organisers intend to ensure that Black people with disabilities are meaningfully and appropriately compensated for their participation.

The project will examine the combined effects of anti-Black racism, ableism and gender-based discrimination in employment systems while developing policy recommendations aimed at improving economic inclusion.

Racialised disability leaders to receive advocacy support

Race and Disability Canada will receive $65,000 for Leading From the Intersections, a two-year national project aimed at strengthening leadership and representation among racialised people with disabilities.

The initiative will include community consultations, mentorship retreats, leadership development and opportunities for strategic engagement.

It will examine barriers faced at the intersection of race and disability while helping participants develop the knowledge, skills and networks required to engage in advocacy, policymaking and human rights processes.

The project is also expected to generate practical recommendations and best practices for more inclusive governance, services and policies.

Children with disabilities to receive new rights education tools

The Childhood Disability Collaborative at McGill University will receive $100,000 for the BLOCKS project.

The initiative, whose name stands for Building Learning Opportunities for Children’s Knowledge of their rights System, is designed to promote the rights of children with disabilities in Canadian policy and practice.

A key outcome will be the development of an educational toolkit on the CRPD for school-aged children with disabilities, their families or guardians and professionals who work with children.

The intended users include educators, caregivers, healthcare providers and workers in leisure and community-based services.

Young people with disabilities to shape advocacy priorities

Arch Disability Law will receive $124,879 for a project focused on youth and young adults with disabilities.

The initiative will help participants better understand and advocate for disability rights using the CRPD and Canada’s 2025 Concluding Observations as key reference points.

Accessible bilingual public legal education sessions will cover international human rights frameworks, community-based monitoring and disability advocacy.

The project will also address the intersectional experiences of young people with disabilities and establish a young advocates committee.

Youth committee to develop recommendations and international engagement

The young advocates committee will identify priority issues arising from the concluding observations and develop youth-led advocacy positions.

Participants will also help create and deliver a side event at the Conference of States Parties to the CRPD, giving young Canadians with disabilities an opportunity to contribute to international discussions surrounding the implementation of disability rights.

Government says participation is central to inclusion

The federal funding reflects Canada’s stated commitment to creating a society in which people with disabilities can participate fully in social, economic and public life.

By supporting community-led research, education, leadership development and knowledge-sharing, the seven projects will approach disability inclusion from a range of perspectives.

The initiatives also place lived experience at the centre of efforts to understand barriers and develop practical responses consistent with Canada’s obligations under the UN disability rights convention.
