Five suspected armed robbers blew up an ATM at a bank in Murehwa Centre early on Tuesday and escaped with US$30,000 and ZiG15,000.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the robbery.
“We are investigating an armed robbery incident which occurred in Murehwa where five suspects blew up an ATM and went away with US$30,000 as well as ZiG15,000,” said Commissioner Nyathi. “We will release more information later as investigations continue.”
The incident reportedly happened at around 2 am. The suspects allegedly disarmed and assaulted a security guard who was manning the bank premises. They are also said to have tried to apprehend another guard at a nearby bank but failed.
The robbery comes amid growing concern over attacks targeting ATMs and businesses holding large amounts of cash.
Just last Tuesday, also at around 2 am, another ATM was blasted at Govans Complex in Norton, with the suspects escaping with an undisclosed amount of cash.
A week earlier, robbers reportedly broke into a ZB Bank branch at Mpandawana Growth Point in Gutu through the roof.
They reportedly targeted an ATM inside the bank and blew it up with explosives before making off with an undisclosed amount of money.
