Tanzania, Uganda move to share experience on local participation in oil and gas projects

DODOMA: TANZANIA and Uganda are set to deepen the exchange of experience on local participation in oil and gas projects, as both countries seek to address challenges limiting the involvement of their citizens in the sector.

Director General of the Petroleum Upstream Regulatory Authority (PURA), Engineer Charles Sangweni, said the two countries will continue sharing experience on mechanisms for ensuring greater participation of local businesses and professionals in petroleum activities.

He made the statement in Dodoma during a working session between PURA and members of the Environment and Natural Resources Committee of the Parliament of Uganda, who were briefed on how the authority oversees local participation in Tanzania’s oil and gas sector.

Engineer Sangweni said the Ugandan delegation has gained an understanding of PURA’s approach and is expected to apply the lessons in carrying out oversight responsibilities of Uganda’s petroleum authority.

Chairperson of the Ugandan Parliamentary Committee on Environment and Natural Resources, Anna Maria Nankabirwa, said the meeting aims at sharing experience on petroleum matters, while stressing the need for Tanzania and Uganda to jointly monitor progress of the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP), including expenditure and revenues generated from oil and gas activities.

Before meeting PURA, the Ugandan committee visited the EACOP project site in Tanga.
