Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney isn’t amused. In a pointed response, he reminded everyone that the name “Lake Ontario” dates back over 400 years, rooted in the Wendat word meaning “the lake is beautiful, the lake is big.”
When Donald Trump pushed through an executive order to rename Lake Ontario to “Lake America,” the political decision quickly turned into internet comedy gold. Within days, the ripple effect hit Google Maps, where US users began spotting the updated name. Suddenly, one of North America’s most iconic water bodies had a brand-new identity, depending on where you were viewing it from. According to Google, the shift reflects updates from the US Geographic Names Information System. In simple terms, if you’re in the US, it’s now “Lake America.” In Canada, it’s still “Lake Ontario.” Everywhere else? You’ll see both.
Meanwhile, Apple Maps has yet to follow suit, staying noticeably silent on the change. The lake, which borders New York and the Canadian province of Ontario, has always been shared territory, making the unilateral rename feel, to many, like a bold overreach.

Trump didn’t hold back when justifying the move. Speaking after signing the order, he reignited tensions with Canada, claiming, “Canada has been ripping us off for a long time on trade.” He doubled down, adding, “We defend Canada for nothing… They don’t pay us to defend Canada.” The rename wasn’t entirely out of the blue either. Donald Trump had floated the idea days earlier, amid escalating trade disputes and threats of steep tariffs on Canadian auto imports. It is important to note that while the US can rename features for its own federal use, it can’t force Canada (or the rest of the world) to play along.
Canada claps back

Thanks to Donald Trump, it’s now SHAME.”
