The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Jigawa State has vowed to reclaim National Assembly seats it lost to opposition parties in 2023, saying internal divisions that contributed to its electoral setbacks have been resolved.
APC senatorial candidate for Jigawa South-West, Sale Garba, said the party had reviewed its performance in the last general election, identified the factors responsible for its losses and developed strategies to reverse them in 2027.
Garba spoke with journalists after a consultative stakeholders’ forum for the senatorial zone at Government House, Dutse.
He said greater unity within the party and the performance of Governor Umar Namadi’s administration had strengthened the APC’s prospects ahead of the polls.
In the 2023 elections, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won the Jigawa South-West senatorial seat and two of the state’s 11 House of Representatives seats — Dutse/Kiyawa and Birnin Kudu/Buji federal constituencies.
The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) also won the Gwaram Federal Constituency.
The opposition also made inroads into the state House of Assembly, with the PDP and NNPP securing seats, although some of the opposition lawmakers have since defected to the APC.
Reflecting on the APC’s losses, particularly in the South-West zone, Garba said the party had identified its mistakes and taken steps to prevent a recurrence.
“More than any political party in Jigawa State and the country at large, the APC has a lot of proof to show why it should be re-elected because, in the whole of the state, there is no part that has not benefited from the developmental attention of the Governor Umar Namadi-led administration,” he said.
Garba said the governor had also succeeded in reconciling competing interests within the ruling party, which he identified as one of its major challenges ahead of the 2023 elections.
“You will recall that before now, our major challenge in the party had been lack of unity. But in Jigawa, we are very lucky. We have a leader and father who, in whatever he does, acts in the interest of the common man, with no strings attached and no personal interest,” he said.
Garba consequently warned opposition parties to expect a stronger APC in 2027.
“So, in terms of preparedness, what I can say to our opponents is that if they think they are ready, I feel they should have a rethink because what we are about to unveil will defeat our opponents across the state,” he said.
