Black Stars crisis: Minority demands review of GFA governance and player selection

The Minority in Parliament has called for a review of the Ghana Football Associations (GFA) governance structure and the process used to identify and select players for the Black Stars amid the teams poor start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. In a press statement issued on Wednesday, September 30, the Minority said the Black Stars recent results cannot be treated as isolated incidents and called for broader scrutiny of the administration and development of Ghana football.Ghana have lost their opening two Group C qualifiers, suffering a 2-0 defeat to Cote dIvoire in Bouak before surrendering a two-goal lead in a 4-2 home defeat to The Gambia. The Minority also pointed to Ghanas failure to qualify for the 2025 AFCON and said the Black Stars have now gone eight consecutive AFCON qualifying matches without a victory. The statement argued that the situation should not be reduced to the current coach, Carlos Queiroz, noting that Ghanas difficulties predate his appointment.Changing coaches without examining the structures within which successive technical teams operate risks repeating the same cycle, the Minority said.As part of its proposed reforms, the Minority called for a review of the GFAs governance and accountability framework, including decision-making, technical appointments and performance assessment. It also wants a transparent review of player identification and selection, with selections based on merit, current performance, tactical requirements and commitment to the national team. The Minority further called for an independent technical and administrative audit of the Black Stars and the structures supporting Ghanas national teams. It said the public deserves answers on player selection, technical planning, scouting, preparation, expenditure on the national teams, youth development and Ghanas long-term football strategy. The group also called for greater transparency over expenditure on the Black Stars, including preparation, travel, bonuses and technical-team costs. On the GFA leadership, the Minority said growing public concerns cannot simply be dismissed, particularly given the Black Stars prolonged failure to win an AFCON qualifier. The leadership of the GFA must account for its stewardship, the decisions taken during this period and the outcomes produced, the statement said. The Minority also called for renewed investment in juvenile football, academies, school football and the domestic leagues to create a sustainable pathway for developing Ghanaian talent. It stressed that any institutional changes must comply with Ghanas legal framework and applicable FIFA and CAF requirements. The Minority concluded that Ghana football requires more than another change of coach, calling instead for a comprehensive reset involving accountability, competent administration, technical discipline and sustained investment.
