Nandi-Ndaitwah mourns King Harald V of Norway

President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah is mourning the death of Norway’s King Harald V, while recognising the historic ties between Namibia and Norway forged during the country’s struggle for freedom and independence.

Harald V ruled Norway from 1991 until his death at age 89 on Friday.

His only son, Crown Prince Haakon VIII, has succeeded him.

Nandi-Ndaitwah extended her condolences to King Haakon VIII, the royal family, the Norwegian government and its people.

In her condolences message on Friday, she describes the late monarch as a devoted king who served Norway with dignity, compassion and an unwavering sense of duty.

She also reflects on the longstanding friendship between Namibia and Norway, particularly Norway’s support and solidarity with the Namibian people during the liberation struggle.

According to Nandi-Ndaitwah, those historic bonds remain relevant today and continue to underpin cooperation between the two countries based on mutual respect and shared values.

She says Namibia and Norway remain committed to promoting peace, democracy and human dignity, principles that have continued to strengthen relations between the two nations.

“Namibia joins the people of Norway in mourning the passing of King Harald V and honouring his life and legacy,” the president says.

She says King Harald V’s death is not only felt in Namibia but marked as a moment to recognise Norway’s longstanding friendship with the Namibian people and its contribution to the country’s journey to independence.
