CBZ Holdings – through its philanthropic arm – the CBZ Foundation said it was extending up to US$50 000 to families affected by the Lake Kariba ferry disaster of 11 August 2026.
The Rural Industrialisation Development Agency (Rida) ferry capsized while on a trip to Chalala, a fishing point located about 80 kilometres south west of Kariba.
Close to one hundred passengers died in the accident.
In a statement, Zimbabwe’s biggest banking group said the donation would be extended immediately.
“Each affected family will receive US$300 in temporary financial relief, supporting both survivors and bereaved families with some of their immediate needs during this difficult time,” the statement said.
“The tragedy has deeply affected families and communities across the country, with many left facing the pain of loss and the immediate challenges that follow such a devastating event. CBZ Holdings Group Chief Executive Officer, Lawrence Nyazema said, “Our hearts go out to all the families affected by this devastating tragedy. While no financial assistance can take away the pain of loss, we hope this support will help ease some of the immediate burdens faced by families at this difficult time. As CBZ, we stand with them and with Zimbabwe as we mourn and support one another.”
