THRDC marks World Democracy Day, insists on reconciliation to foster unity

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Tanzania Human Rights Defenders Coalition (THRDC) has joined the international community in commemorating World Democracy Day, calling on the government, public institutions, political parties, citizens and other democratic stakeholders to initiate and sustain dialogue and reconciliation aimed at reducing divisions, fostering unity and restoring public confidence in democratic institutions and processes.

The call was made in a statement issued and signed by the coalition’s National Coordinator, Advocate Onesmo Olengurumwa, today, September 15, 2026, as part of the World Democracy Day commemorations.

In the statement, Olengurumwa said democracy requires political tolerance, stressing that disagreeing with the government, criticising policies or demanding accountability does not constitute a crime or hostility towards the nation.

He said differences of opinion are an essential part of democracy and should be addressed in accordance with the law, without threats, discrimination or the unnecessary use of force. He also urged citizens to respect the opinions and freedoms of others and to accept the existence of differing views.

“Strong democracies are built through dialogue, cooperation, tolerance and respect for diverse perspectives,” Olengurumwa said.

Commenting on this year’s theme, “Deliberative Democratic Processes,” Olengurumwa said it underscores the importance of involving citizens from diverse groups in meaningful discussions to improve decision-making, build trust, reduce divisions and promote peaceful and inclusive societies.

“Democracy does not end at the ballot box. Citizen participation should take place before, during and after elections by providing people with opportunities to engage in discussions on policies, laws, budgets, development plans and other decisions that affect their lives,” Advocate Olengurumwa said.
