Twenty-six people were killed and 2,803 injured in 1,975 traffic accidents in Morocco’s urban areas between August 24 and 30, the General Directorate of National Security said.
The injured included 125 people in serious condition.
Police attributed the accidents mainly to driver inattention, failure to yield, speeding, pedestrian inattention, insufficient following distances and loss of vehicle control.
Other causes included unsafe or unauthorized turns, failure to stop, driving against traffic, improper lane use, running red lights, drunk driving and unsafe overtaking.
During the same week, police recorded 52,052 traffic violations and submitted 7,702 reports to prosecutors. Officers collected 44,350 on-the-spot fines totaling MAD 9.69 million.
Authorities impounded 5,434 vehicles, seized 7,702 documents and removed 391 vehicles from circulation.
