Orlando Pirates have put themselves in a commanding position, but the defending champions still have work to do if they are to reach another MTN8 final.
The Buccaneers take a 1–0 advantage into Saturday’s semi-final second leg against Sekhukhune United at the Orlando Amstel Arena, knowing that avoiding defeat would secure their place in a fifth consecutive final.
Pirates have dominated the competition in recent seasons, winning the MTN8 four times in succession.
That remarkable run has created an expectation that the Buccaneers should once again go all the way, but their immediate challenge is negotiating a second leg against a Sekhukhune side that has nothing to lose.
The danger for Pirates is that their advantage could encourage complacency.
They have already beaten Babina Noko twice this week, winning the MTN8 first leg 1–0 before claiming a 2–0 Betway Premiership victory on Tuesday.
That sequence gives Abdeslam Ouaddou’s team considerable psychological confidence, but it also means they will face an opponent determined to produce a response when it matters most.
The Buccaneers know that the equation is simple: a draw will be enough to send them through.
But playing solely to protect a one-goal advantage could carry its own risks.
Sekhukhune have to attack, and that should create opportunities for Pirates to exploit spaces on the counter.
The challenge for Ouaddou will be deciding how aggressively his side should approach the match.
Another early goal could effectively put the tie beyond Sekhukhune, while conceding first would immediately change the complexion of the contest.
Pirates’ recent results suggest they have the confidence to handle the occasion.
Boitumelo Radiopane opened his account for the season in Tuesday’s league victory before Oswin Appollis added a second, giving Ouaddou further attacking options heading into the decisive cup clash.
But the French coach will know that Saturday’s match cannot be approached as a repeat of Tuesday’s encounter.
The stakes are higher, and Sekhukhune’s desperation will make them a different proposition.
For Pirates, reaching a fifth consecutive MTN8 final would further underline their remarkable dominance of the competition. Yet history will count for little if they fail to complete the job over the next 90 minutes.
The Buccaneers have earned the advantage. Now they must prove they can protect it.
