Signals Bureau case: ‘I had about 60 questions’ – Atta Akyea welcomes extra cross-examination day

Counsel for former National Signals Bureau (NSB) Director-General Kwabena Adu-Boahene appears enthused about the day for extra cross-examination afforded his team.

Samuel Atta Akyea said he had about 60 questions prepared for the fourth prosecution witness but will reduce them to 40 following a three-hour limit imposed by the court.

The lawyer said the additional day granted by the Accra High Court was therefore necessary to ensure all relevant areas of the witness’s testimony are adequately covered.

Speaking after proceedings, counsel said he was pleased with the court’s decision to allow the defence an additional day.

“Very much so, because it is not right to truncate cross-examination when some areas have not been covered. We have some residual but consequential areas for the cover,” he said.

The lawyer explained that he initially had about 60 questions to put to the fourth prosecution witness but would streamline the exercise to fit within the three-hour timeframe indicated by the judge.

He said the defence would focus on the most consequential areas of the witness’s evidence when the case resumes.

The Accra High Court has adjourned the trial to September 2, 2026, for the continuation of the cross-examination.

The fourth prosecution witness, an investigator with the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), has been testifying about the investigation into alleged financial wrongdoing involving Mr Adu-Boahene and other accused persons.

The case centres on allegations surrounding the handling of funds linked to a cybersecurity procurement arrangement involving the National Signals Bureau.

Mr Adu-Boahene and the other accused persons have denied the charges.

The defence is expected to continue questioning the fourth prosecution witness when the trial resumes on September 2.
