Finding a Job in South Africa Takes 15 Months on Average, Pnet Report Reveals

CAPE TOWN, Western Cape — According to the latest employment data, finding a job in South Africa now takes an average of 15 months, highlighting significant shifts and prolonged challenges within the national labor market. The comprehensive Pnet Job Market Trends Report, which analyzed 2.8 million employment records between 2022 and 2025, reveals that the timeline varies drastically depending on the sector, experience level, and degree of specialization.

While the national average sits at 15 months—a figure slightly skewed by senior positions taking considerably longer—the data shows that highly specialized roles face the steepest climbs. It takes an average of 20 months to secure new employment for financial portfolio managers, risk managers, business architects, and solution architects. Similarly, job seekers in finance, engineering, and business management generally spend 16 months or more searching for a new role.

Conversely, sales roles recorded the quickest turnaround, with the average job search falling to just nine months in 2025. Other sectors that recorded search times shorter than the national average include building and construction, marketing, maintenance, repairs, and administration.

Navigating a Challenging Hiring Landscape

Simon Blair, spokesperson for Pnet, notes that the extended timelines reflect a highly competitive and complex hiring environment.

“What this report is really telling us is that it’s not so easy to find employment; it’s absolutely a challenge,” Blair explained. He pointed out that skilled individuals are finding it increasingly difficult to secure new work as they move up the professional spectrum.

Several key barriers contribute to these prolonged search periods. Blair highlighted the country’s high unemployment rates and a distinct lack of available opportunities in senior or highly specialized sectors. Furthermore, the recruitment processes for these roles have become significantly slower. Candidates in these fields are now subjected to multiple interview rounds, extensive assessments, and a larger number of stakeholders involved in the final decision-making process, all of which lengthen the time to hire.

Strategic Advice for Job Seekers

To navigate this demanding landscape, Blair outlined three critical steps for job seekers to better equip themselves for the current labor market:

1. Understand the Data and Set Expectations:

Job seekers must understand sector-specific timelines rather than comparing their search to peers in different industries. Recognizing that a search could take up to 15 months helps set realistic expectations.

2. Cultivate a Strong Personal Brand and Upskill:

Maintaining a powerful, up-to-date online presence is essential. Blair emphasized the importance of continuous learning, noting that adding credentials from short courses and AI training to CVs and professional profiles gives candidates a distinct competitive edge.

3. Start the Search Early:

Being proactive is crucial. Understanding the extended timelines means job seekers should begin their search journey well before they actually need to transition into a new role.

The Corporate Role in Upskilling and Retention

The prolonged hiring cycles also place a spotlight on corporate South Africa and how organizations can attract and retain top talent. Blair stressed that recruiters and employers must adapt to the current realities of the labor market.

For employers, crafting a striking Employer Value Proposition (EVP) is more critical than ever. “Candidates are not merely just going for the highest salary anymore,” Blair noted. “They want to go where they can grow, where they can feel welcome, and where they can really start to develop their skills.”

To secure the best talent, companies need to recognize that time-to-hire is of the essence. Blair advised organizations to be more proactive through “targeted capture”—building a robust pipeline of suitable candidates before a vacancy even arises.

Finally, to combat the challenges of a tight labor market, Blair emphasized that corporate South Africa must place a heavy emphasis on upskilling existing staff. By fostering an environment of continuous development and growth, companies can improve retention and avoid the constant churn of losing talented employees to competitors.
