Kanayo O Kanayo, Rita Edochie, Uche Ogbodo, others mourn Francis Duru’s death

There are moments when even people who have spent years around one another struggle to find the right words. That was the mood across Nollywood on Friday, October 23, as news of the death of 57-year-old veteran actor Francis Duru spread through the industry.

The announcement came early in the day, leaving colleagues, friends and fans trying to process the loss of an actor who had been part of the Nigerian film industry for decades.

Duru’s family announced his death on his official Instagram page in the early hours of Friday. In the statement, the family said the actor died following a brief illness and asked for prayers, love and understanding as they mourned him.

“We, the family of Francis Duru, regret to announce his passing following a brief illness.
“We appreciate your prayers, love, and understanding. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen.”

The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) also confirmed the news. AGN president Abubakar Yakubu described Duru as “another great thespian” and paid tribute to the late actor.

The confirmation came as tributes began appearing across social media, with several of Duru’s colleagues reacting to the news in disbelief.

Veteran actor Anayo Modestus Onyekwere popularly known as Kanayo O. Kanayo took to his official Instagram account to react to the death of Francis Duru sharing a photo of the deceased, he wrote:

“A CONSUMMATE ACTOR HAS LEFT THE STAGE. One of the most flexible, prolific performers Nigeria ever produced. Rest in Peace my brother.”

Among the early reactions was that of actress Rita Edochie. Rather than a long tribute, Edochie’s first response was a cry of shock.

“JEEEEESUS CHRIST OOOOOOO FRANCIS DURU,” she wrote.

The reaction captured the disbelief that followed the announcement, with many of Duru’s colleagues seemingly still trying to come to terms with the news.

Actress Uche Ogbodo was another colleague who reacted to the announcement. Her response was brief but spoke to the weight of the news.

“I’m speechless,” Ogbodo wrote.

For an industry that has experienced the loss of several familiar faces over the years, Duru’s passing still appeared to come as a shock to those who knew him.

Angela Okorie:

Actress Angela Okorie also reacted to the announcement on Ify Okeke’s post confirming the sad news.

“Jesus christ what happened,” she wrote.

Her comment reflected the confusion surrounding the news as fellow actors tried to understand how Duru had suddenly passed away. The family has so far disclosed only that he died after a brief illness and has not provided further details about the illness.

For actress Onyinye Okafor, the reaction carried a more personal tone.

“Uncle francis,” she wrote.

The simple words stood out among the early messages because of the familiar way she addressed the late actor. It offered a glimpse into the personal relationships Duru had built within the industry beyond his work on screen.

Queeneth Hilbert, Jayeola Monje and others react

Actress Queeneth Hilbert also reacted to the announcement with a brief but emotional “Omg.”

Jayeola Monje wrote, “May His soul rest in peace.”

The comments were among several early reactions posted under the announcement, as colleagues continued to mourn the veteran actor.

The News Comes Months after a health-rumour scare

Duru’s death also comes months after he publicly addressed concerns about his health. In June 2026, a video showing the actor looking frail had circulated online, leading to reports that he was seriously ill.

Duru responded in an Instagram video, dismissing the reports and insisting that he was not as sick as the circulating material suggested.

“I have never been that sick and would never be that sick,” he said, adding that by God’s grace, he would “keep being stronger and stronger.”

He described the video and claims surrounding it as false and malicious and urged his fans not to believe the reports.

A Loss Nollywood Is Still Processing

Francis Duru’s death has left colleagues mourning in different ways. For some, there were only a few words. For others, there was disbelief.

And for some, the first reaction was simply to call his name. As more tributes emerge, the early comments from Rita Edochie, Uche Ogbodo, Angela Okorie, Bimbo Oshin, Onyinye Okafor, Queeneth Hilbert and Jayeola Monje capture the first wave of emotion that followed the news.
