Health Ministry confirms recall of blood pressure drug Nifedipine

In a statement issued on 12 September 2026, the Ministry said the Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ) — the country’s statutory body responsible for regulating the safety, quality and effectiveness of medicines — had ordered the recall as part of its routine post-market surveillance work.

“The Ministry further confirms that the MCAZ notice currently circulating concerning the recall of specific batches of Nifedipine 10mg tablets is genuine and forms part of the Authority’s routine regulatory and post-market surveillance activities,” the Ministry said.

The Ministry said the recall covers two batches of Nifedipine 10mg tablets manufactured by Remedica Ltd, a pharmaceutical company based in Cyprus: batch 112033 and batch 117367.

Nifedipine is widely prescribed in Zimbabwe for the management of high blood pressure and certain heart-related conditions.

According to MCAZ, the recall follows confirmed out-of-specification results detected during stability testing of the affected medicines.

The regulator classified it as a Class Two recall, extending down to retail level, meaning the affected stock must be withdrawn from pharmacies and health facilities as well as from patients who may already have it in their possession.

MCAZ said the recall was not limited to Nifedipine alone. The same round of testing also flagged quality issues with Levodopa/Carbidopa tablets, also manufactured by Remedica, which are used in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease and Parkinsonism.
