Iran: We’re Having A Hard Time Figuring Out Who The Hell To Deal With; I Think We Went Too Far–Trump

According to a report by Al Jazeera on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, US President Donald Trump has suggested that Washington may have gone too far in its military campaign against Iran’s leadership, admitting that his administration is struggling to identify Iranian officials with whom it can negotiate.

Speaking at a campaign rally in Youngstown, Ohio, Trump acknowledged the difficulties facing the United States as it attempts to determine suitable representatives for possible diplomatic discussions with Tehran. His remarks indicated that the ongoing conflict had created uncertainty about the Iranian officials available for negotiations.

“We might have gone too far with the leaders because we don’t know who the hell we’re dealing with any more,” the US president said.

Trump also claimed that finding someone willing to take over Iran’s presidency had become difficult, suggesting that potential candidates were reluctant to assume the position amid the continuing hostilities.

“Nobody wants to be the president of Iran,” he added. However, Masoud Pezeshkian has held the Iranian presidency since July 2024.

The American president repeated his concerns about the difficulties involved in identifying Iranian representatives, acknowledging that the situation had complicated Washington’s efforts to determine its next steps. His comments raised questions about the challenges of pursuing negotiations while military operations continue.

“We’re having a hard time figuring out who the hell to deal with, to be honest with you. I think we went too far,” Trump said.

During the rally, Trump also reiterated his claims that Iran’s military capabilities had been severely weakened by the US campaign. He asserted that the country had lost its air force and all 159 of its ships, although these claims were not independently established in the supplied report.

Describing the vessels’ alleged destruction, Trump said they were “resting beautifully in the bottom of the sea”, emphasising what he portrayed as the scale of the damage inflicted on Iran’s military resources.

His comments came as attacks on commercial shipping continued across the Gulf region, heightening concerns about maritime security and the safety of vessels travelling through important international trade routes.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations agency has documented at least 19 attacks on vessels since October 1. The incidents highlight the persistent risks confronting commercial shipping as tensions continue to threaten stability in the region.

Trump’s remarks underscore the difficulties Washington faces in balancing military pressure with the possibility of diplomatic engagement, particularly as uncertainty surrounding negotiations coincides with continuing threats to maritime traffic across the Gulf.
