YEREVAN: TANZANIA has proposed closer technical engagement with the Global Environment Facility (GEF) to identify funding gaps and prioritise investments in biodiversity conservation and environmental protection.
The proposal includes consultations between GEF, the Vice-President’s Office and relevant sector institutions to identify projects requiring financial support and improve coordination in implementing conservation programmes.
Minister of State in the Vice-President’s Office (Union Affairs and Environment), Eng Hamad Yussuf Masauni, presented the proposals during talks with GEF Chief Executive Officer and Chairperson Diego Mesa Puyo on the sidelines of the 17th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity in Yerevan, Armenia, on October 28, 2026.

Eng Masauni said Tanzania has also requested guidance on aligning proposed projects with GEF programme priorities, meeting funding eligibility criteria and following the procedures for project preparation and implementation.
The country further proposed joint strategies to mobilise resources from the government, development partners, conservation organisations and the responsible private sector to broaden funding sources and sustain environmental projects over the long term.
Eng Masauni said discussions should also explore sustainable conservation financing mechanisms, including conservation trust funds, payments for ecosystem services and investments that support environmental protection.
He stressed the importance of ensuring such mechanisms safeguard the environment while protecting community interests.
The proposals aim to strengthen cooperation between Tanzania and GEF and improve access to financing for biodiversity conservation and environmental initiatives.
