The Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Mozambique welcomes Ambassador Francisco Fontán Pardo, who will assume his duties as Head of Delegation on1 September. Ambassador Fontán succeeds Ambassador Antonino Maggiore, whose four-year mandate as Head of Delegation concludes today, 31 August 2026.
The new Ambassador was appointed by Kaja Kallas, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission. Ambassador Fontán has extensive diplomatic experience with the European External Action Service, most recently serving as Deputy Head of Delegation of the European Union to Brazil, and previously as Head of Cabinet to the former High Representative and as EU Ambassador to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Ahead of his arrival in Maputo, Ambassador Francisco Fontán said:
“I am honoured to begin my mandate in Mozambique and look forward to working closely with the relevant authorities, civil society, private sector, EU Member States, and international partners. The European Union and Mozambique share a strong and longstanding partnership. I am committed to building on this relationship and advancing our common priorities for sustainable development, consolidated peace and stability, and shared prosperity.”
Ambassador Fontán succeeds Ambassador Antonino Maggiore, who led the EU Delegation during a period of deepening cooperation and significant engagement between the European Union and Mozambique.
Ambassador Maggiore expressed his appreciation to Mozambique and its people, with whom the EU Delegation has worked closely over the past four years, and conveyed his gratitude for the strong relations and spirit of cooperation that have marked this period.
Ambassador Fontán will present copies of his Credentials to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Mozambique in the coming days.
As I conclude today my mandate as EU Ambassador to Mozambique, I leave grateful for the work done, the friendships built and the strength of our bilateral links.
