Government secures three spots on Black Stars coaching search committee

[caption id="attachment_1298413" align="alignnone" width="600"] Sports Minister Kofi Adams and GFA President Kurt Okraku[/caption]The government is set to play a more active role in the search for the next Black Stars head coach following a meeting between the Sports and Recreation Ministry and the Ghana Football Association on Friday.Sports Minister Kofi Adams met GFA President Kurt Okraku and members of the Executive Committee at the Ministry in Accra, with discussions lasting more than two hours.A key outcome of the meeting is the formation of a technical search committee to identify and assess candidates for the vacant Black Stars coaching position.Three representatives from the government are expected to serve on the committee, giving the Ministry a direct presence in the process of selecting Carlos Queiroz's successor. The development comes after the GFA and Queiroz mutually agreed to terminate their relationship following Ghana's poor start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The Black Stars lost 2-0 to Cote dIvoire in Bouak before suffering a 4-2 home defeat to The Gambia, leaving Ghana without a point from their opening two Group C matches. The latest arrangement gives government a greater voice in the coaching search while leaving the formal football administration with the GFA.It is not the first time the GFA has used a search committee to identify a Black Stars coach. In 2024, a five-member committee submitted its recommendations to the GFA Executive Council, which then took the final decision on the appointment. That committee included a representative from the Ministry of Youth and Sports. The new committee will now face the task of identifying a coach capable of providing a clear technical direction for a team that is under pressure to revive its AFCON qualifying campaign. The GFA has previously said it wants a coach whose profile matches the technical demands of the Black Stars, while the government has indicated that its involvement is linked partly to its financial support for the national teams. The appointment process is expected to be closely watched after the failure of Queiroz's second spell in charge, with the next coach likely to face immediate pressure to turn around Ghana's fortunes.
