Grow Secure Crop Insurance: How Free Drought Coverage Transforms Farm Financing

MIDDELBURG, Mpumalanga — A new agricultural initiative named Grow Secure crop insurance is reshaping how farmers approach yield protection and operational funding. By partnering with King Price’s Gemoedsrus, Rand Agri has introduced a program that adds free drought cover to existing hail insurance policies, creating a crucial safety net for agricultural yields under pressure. According to Gert Oosthuizen, representing Rand Agri, this innovative product acts as a powerful financial enabler for producers facing climate uncertainties such as El Niño.
A Strategic Partnership for Multi-Risk Protection
Rand Agri, a Middelburg-based grain company, operates far beyond traditional grain purchasing and distribution. With its own silos, banking partnerships, and milling and processing capabilities, the company is deeply invested in the farming community. Recognizing the growing need for multi-risk protection, Rand Agri collaborated with Gemoedsrus to enhance standard hail insurance policies.
Oosthuizen explained that the Grow Secure initiative automatically includes drought coverage at no additional cost. This coverage protects up to 50% of a farm’s local Long-Term Average Yield (LGO). For example, in an area with an LGO of 6 tons per hectare, the policy ensures that if yields drop significantly due to severe drought conditions, the farmer is still covered for a substantial portion of their expected output, preventing total financial loss.
Empowering Farm Financing
One of the most significant advantages of the Grow Secure crop insurance is its direct impact on farm financing. Financial institutions are inherently risk-averse, often hesitating to approve loans for agricultural operations vulnerable to extreme weather.
Oosthuizen emphasized that this insurance product directly addresses that concern. By guaranteeing a baseline yield payout even in adverse conditions, the policy de-risks the farmer’s operation in the eyes of the bank. This assurance provides farmers with the financial leverage needed to secure essential funding, such as production loans for purchasing adequate fertilizer, ultimately supporting a more stable and productive farming cycle.
Zero Additional Cost and Open Accessibility
Despite the comprehensive nature of the multi-risk coverage, the additional drought protection is completely free. Farmers simply maintain their standard hail insurance, and the drought cover is seamlessly integrated into the policy at no extra premium.
Furthermore, the initiative is not restricted to existing clients. Oosthuizen confirmed that the program is open to all farmers. Any producer interested in the product can reach out to Rand Agri for a quote. In doing so, Rand Agri will also offer to market and trade their grain, welcoming new producers into their supportive agricultural network.
How to Access the Program
Farmers interested in securing their yields and improving their financing prospects can easily inquire about the program. Producers can speak directly to their King Price broker and request a Rand Agri contact number, or they can access the dedicated Grow Secure portal online to find more information, request a quote, and activate their coverage.
By combining reliable crop insurance with strategic farm financing support, Grow Secure is setting a new standard for agricultural resilience, ensuring that farmers have the safety net they need to thrive in unpredictable climates.
