Uganda advances to Rugby Africa 7s semifinal

Uganda has booked its ticket to the semifinal of the Rugby Africa 7s after defeating Tunisia 26-10 to secure two wins in the Pool.

With one more pool game to play, the Cranes had to first deal with the Tunisians to ensure their advancement. Malcom Okello opened the scoring when he broke the line between two defenders in white to dot down for the men in black. The conversion from Okello was good, giving Uganda a 7-point lead.

The momentum kept shifting in favour of Uganda when Tunisia received a yellow card, but the Ugandans couldn’t capitalise. After two scrum calls on penalties that yielded absolutely nothing, the Cranes were soon punished for their decision-making.

A five-man Tunisia side managed to pull back 5 points, exposing Uganda’s defence for the first time in the Rugby Africa 7s.

Daniels Otim was the first of two Ugandan players to be sent to the sin bin as he tapped the ball forward on that occasion. Karim Arinaitwe was the other naughty Crane in that game, giving coach Allan Otim and his technical crew a lot to think about in terms of defence and discipline.

Aaron Tukei calmed the home fans down with an exciting try, and Okello’s conversion was the icing on the cake for what had seemed like a tough encounter.

The Cranes were, thereafter, recipients of a penalty try after Desire Ayera was dangerously tackled without the ball as he attempted to receive Ian Munyani’s crosskick with a clear opportunity to go over for a try.

With the hosts enjoying a 21-05 lead, Tunisia added a second try, exploiting the defence of the Ugandans once again.

Shakim Ssembusi’s solo effort closed out a game that posed questions for the Ugandans.
