Zimbabwe’s Under-15 boys’ national football team made a winning start to their FIFA U-15 World Cup and Festival campaign with a 3-2 victory over Cambodia in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Saturday.
The Young Warriors twice came from behind before completing the comeback to secure all three points in their opening Group C encounter.
Cambodia opened the scoring in the second minute, but Ngoni Tombo immediately restored parity for Zimbabwe a minute later.
The Asian side regained the lead in the 22nd minute, leaving Zimbabwe with more work to do.
Adam Adamu equalised for the Young Warriors five minutes later before Tombo completed his brace on the half-hour mark to put Zimbabwe ahead for the first time in the match.
The goal proved decisive as Zimbabwe held on to secure a positive start to the inaugural tournament.
The Young Warriors are in Group C alongside Cambodia, the Republic of Ireland, Montenegro, Nicaragua and England. They will face the Republic of Ireland in their next match on Sunday, 25 October, before taking on Montenegro, Nicaragua and England in their remaining group fixtures.
The inaugural FIFA U-15 World Cup and Festival is being held in Baku from 24 to 30 October, featuring an eight-a-side format with two 20-minute halves.
The tournament begins with a round-robin qualification stage, after which teams are placed into six performance tiers based on their results. All teams will continue competing until the final matchday, with the winners of Tier A crowned the overall champions.
