ZANZIBAR: THE Zanzibar First Lady and Chairperson of the Zanzibar Maisha Bora Foundation (ZMBF), Mariam Mwinyi, has called for greater efforts to improve maternal and child health and ensure access to proper nutrition, saying the measures are essential for reducing deaths and building a healthier society.
Ms Mwinyi made the remarks on Monday during a visit to the Wajamama Institution in Mbweni, Zanzibar, which focuses on the health and wellbeing of pregnant women, children and the wider community.
Wajamama is a registered non-governmental organisation working to improve community wellbeing by making holistic healthcare services accessible to women and children from all socio-economic backgrounds.
Ms Mwinyi said health education for expectant mothers was particularly important as it enables women to understand how to protect their health during pregnancy, prepare for safe childbirth and ensure their children receive proper care and nutrition.
She said the ZMBF was committed to supporting government efforts to improve maternal and child health and wellbeing through promoting proper nutrition, providing health education and encouraging access to essential family health services.
The First Lady urged health institutions to continue providing accurate health information and essential services on time, particularly to pregnant women, to safeguard the health and safety of mothers and their children.

She also commended the Wajamama Institution for providing health education to expectant mothers and supporting government initiatives aimed at improving reproductive health and maternal and child wellbeing.
In another development, Ms Mwinyi visited seaweed farmers’ groups in Jambiani Kifumbwi, where she said seaweed farming had significant potential to transform lives if developed through improved techniques and greater innovation.
She said seaweed farming represented an important economic opportunity capable of creating employment and increasing household incomes, particularly for women and young people engaged in the activity.
Ms Mwinyi urged the farmers to change the perception of seaweed as a crop produced and sold mainly as a raw material. Instead, she encouraged them to add value by producing a range of seaweed-based products for domestic and international markets.
The visit formed part of the ZMBF’s efforts to promote maternal and child health and wellbeing while supporting economic activities aimed at increasing incomes and improving livelihoods, particularly among women and young people.
