An amputated human leg wrapped in bandages and partially burnt was found at a dumping site in Chitungwiza on Tuesday, 8 September.
Syringes, gloves, bandages and other medical waste were scattered around the site.
Police suspect the remains were dumped by a private hospital operating in the town, instead of being properly disposed of through incineration.
The leg was discovered by a woman who was scavenging for recyclable plastics. She alerted an attendant at the municipal dumping site, who then called the authorities.
Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the incident.
“Police are investigating a case involving a human body part dumped at a dumping site in Chitungwiza,” he said. “On the scene, police found a human leg wrapped with bandages.”
Inspector Chakanza said the leg appeared to be that of an adult and was partially burnt.
“The observations indicate that someone responsible for disposing of clinical waste decided to dump and burn it at the dumping site. The human leg is under police guard as investigations continue.”
