Defending champions Gor Mahia continued their impressive start to the FKF Premier League season with a narrow 1-0 victory over Kakamega Homeboyz at Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega.
Winger David Okoth scored the decisive goal in the 69th minute, unleashing a powerful left-footed strike to secure maximum points for K’Ogalo away from home.
Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor praised his team’s second-half changes, saying the tactical adjustments shifted the momentum of the match and helped the visitors secure the victory.
“Those who come in, the changes that we make, they are slightly different from what we did last season. Sometimes people would come in and they would not be able to give their best. Today, this time around, we are very happy how they come and transform the game, change the game, said coach Akonnor.
“They read the game very well, they come in, the instructions given to them, they are doing that. Gradually, I think we are progressing very, very well,” he added.
However, Kakamega Homeboyz coach Edward Manoah said his side paid the price for failing to convert its scoring opportunities, adding that the team would work on its finishing in training.
“It's been a game of about four moments. In the first and second halves of the match we didn’t start well compared to our opponents. In the run of play, we conceded a goal from a very tight angle. But after conceding, we had a chance of coming back to the game, but we didn’t. I will just urge the boys to develop a very strong character and also work on attacking,” said Manoah.
The victory strengthens Gor Mahia’s early-season campaign as they seek to defend their league title, while Homeboyz will be looking to bounce back in their next fixture.
