Jeremiah Kioni Sends Message to Methu and Nyoro Amid Mt Kenya Feud
AI summary
Jubilee Deputy Party Leader Jeremiah Kioni has appealed to Nyandarua Senator John Methu and Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro to end their public feud, warning that leadership squabbles in the Mt. Kenya region threaten to jeopardize efforts to build a united Opposition front ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The two political figures have clashed publicly over their regional influence. Methu, who serves as the Secretary-General-designate for the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), has openly questioned Nyoro’s motives since the Kiharu lawmaker joined the Peoples Party of Kenya (PPK), alleging that Nyoro operates as a state-sponsored political proxy. Nyoro has firmly dismissed those accusations.
In a statement on Wednesday, Kioni asked both leaders to set aside their differences and focus on the interests of the country and the Mt Kenya region.
“To my Senator, Kaba Methu, and my younger brother, Hon. Ndindi Nyoro, we have been here before,” Kioni said.
He recalled how rival camps divided Mt Kenya’s political leadership before the 2022 General Election.
“In 2022, we lost sight of the bigger plan and the bigger picture in the noise of Tangatanga and Kieleweke,” he said.
Kioni argued that those divisions kept the region from making deliberate political choices and contributed to the leadership challenges it later faced.
“We must not make the same mistake again,” he said.
He said the current political climate called for cooperation, particularly as leaders prepared for the next election.
“At this critical moment in our country, and more so within our community, we need all hands on deck,” Kioni said.
He urged the two politicians to stop revisiting who started the dispute or what each had said and to focus instead on the people they represent.
“Who did what, who said what, who gave what, or who started what is no longer important. What matters now is the bigger picture; we have a country to serve,” he said.
Kioni also defended political parties’ right to take part in opposition discussions, saying disagreements over personalities, strategy, and political alliances should not take precedence over the national interest.
“Every political party has a right to sit at the table. That is part of the democratic space our founding fathers fought and sacrificed for,” he said.
His appeal comes as the United Opposition works to form a common front and select a single presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto in 2027. Kioni warned that public disputes among opposition leaders could undermine those efforts.
“The country is looking to the United Opposition to provide a credible, united, and single presidential candidate capable of facing the incumbent. But we cannot achieve that objective while we are publicly fighting amongst ourselves,” he said.
Kioni urged Methu and Nyoro to ease tensions, make peace, and put cooperation ahead of personal differences.
“There will always be differences, and there will always be another day to settle political scores. But this moment calls for maturity, restraint, and unity. Let bygones be bygones,” Kioni said.
