Gachagua and Kalonzo Differ Over When to Name United Opposition’s 2027 Presidential Candidate

The disagreement comes as opposition leaders continue consultations on how to unite their parties and agree on one candidate to challenge President William Ruto.

Gachagua has maintained that the coalition should not rush to reveal its flagbearer. He argues that announcing the name too early could expose the candidate to political pressure and attempts to weaken the opposition.

The Democracy for the Citizens Party leader has instead called on opposition principals to strengthen their parties and mobilise supporters before settling on a joint candidate.

Kalonzo, however, has supported an earlier announcement. His position is that identifying the candidate in good time would demonstrate unity and allow the opposition to organise its campaign ahead of the election.

The disagreement highlights the challenge facing opposition leaders as they negotiate their political future. Several figures have expressed interest in the presidency, making consensus an important part of the process.

Despite their differences, opposition leaders have continued holding meetings to discuss cooperation and the selection process.

The question of timing remains a key issue as the coalition prepares for the 2027 contest.
