GAUTENG — A major Gauteng explosives bust has resulted in the arrest of one suspect in Germiston after authorities uncovered a massive cache of illegal materials valued at an estimated R500,000.
The significant seizure took place on Saturday, 29 August 2026, during a focused, intelligence-driven operation in the suburb of Hazelpark. Law enforcement officers responded to a targeted address where they linked up with members of Crime Intelligence. The joint task force had been actively tracking tip-offs regarding the illegal stockpiling of hazardous materials at the residence.
Upon executing a comprehensive search of the property, officers located the stash carefully concealed inside a back room. The dangerous haul included 4,483 blasting cartridges alongside 21 detonating cords, representing a severe threat to local safety had it fallen into the wrong hands.
The suspect was immediately taken into custody for the illegal possession of explosives and is scheduled to appear before the Germiston Magistrate’s Court in the coming days.
Confirming the success of the weekend raid, provincial spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba verified the details surrounding the confiscation and the subsequent arrest. Authorities have emphasized that police investigations are actively continuing as detectives work to trace the supply chain and determine the intended use of the recovered explosives.
