The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has demolished an unauthorised pigsty at Agbogbloshie after its operators failed to comply with a final notice to remove the structure, which was obstructing an ongoing emergency waste evacuation exercise.
The demolition forms part of efforts to facilitate the movement of heavy-duty equipment and personnel deployed to clear accumulated waste and restore environmental cleanliness in the area.
In a statement shared on Facebook, the Assembly said the enforcement action followed an inspection on Thursday, October 8, 2026, led by the Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, and the Metropolitan Coordinating Director, Douglas N.K. Annoful.
The team was assessing progress on the National Emergency Waste Evacuation Exercise when a final warning notice was served on the operators of the pigsty.
According to the AMA, the operators were given an opportunity to remove the structure but failed to comply, leaving the Assembly with no option but to proceed with its removal.
The Mayor disclosed that the pigsty had been established and operated without the necessary permit or approval from the Assembly, in violation of local by-laws governing animal-rearing activities within the metropolis.
He cited the AMA’s Control of Animals By-law, 2017, which prohibits the keeping of pigs, cattle, sheep, goats and other specified animals within the Assembly’s jurisdiction without the requisite permit.
The AMA said the action was necessary to remove the obstruction and allow the emergency waste evacuation exercise to proceed effectively.
