Two African cities have earned places among the world’s 20 best nightlife destinations in 2026, with Johannesburg and Accra recognised by *Time Out *for their vibrant after-dark scenes.
Johannesburg ranked No. 7 globally, making it Africa’s highest-ranked city on the list, while Ghana’s capital Accra placed No. 18.
The ranking was compiled from responses from more than 24,000 locals, combined with assessments from Time Out’s city editors, culture experts and nightlife specialists.
Time Out assessed cities based on factors including the quality and affordability of nightlife, clubbing and cocktail-bar scenes, community, safety, excitement, diversity and how welcoming each destination is.
Time Out praised the cities for their diverse nightlife scenes, strong local culture, affordability and wide range of bars, clubs, live-music venues and late-night experiences.
Only the highest-scoring city from each country was included to ensure global representation.
Johannesburg’s No. 7 position places it ahead of established nightlife destinations including Amsterdam, Madrid and Seoul.
Time Out highlighted the city’s ability to continually reinvent its nightlife, from its historic warehouse-party culture to contemporary venues built around house, techno, Afro-house, gqom, drum and bass and experimental sounds.
The South African city also performed strongly on affordability and community. 66% of locals rated Johannesburg positively for affordability, while 80% said it was easy to find connection and community in the city.
Clubbing, casual pubs and cocktail bars were identified by residents as the city's strongest after-dark offerings.
Accra ranked 18th globally, with Time Out pointing to the Ghanaian capital’s established nightlife districts and growing mix of bars, clubs, live music venues and alternative entertainment spaces.
Osu remains one of the city's main nightlife centres, while East Legon is emerging as another major destination, with new venues adding to Accra's increasingly upscale nightlife scene.
The city also scored strongly for affordability and community. 62% of Accra residents rated going out as affordable, while 75% said it was easy to find community. Another 65% described the city as welcoming and friendly.

Time Out noted that Accra's nightlife extends beyond mainstream Afrobeats, with electronic music, alté, R&B and other subcultures contributing to the city's after-dark identity.
The two African cities were joined in the global top 20 by destinations including Bangkok, which took the No. 1 position, Berlin at No. 2 and Melbourne at No. 3.
The rankings suggest that Africa's leading nightlife capitals are increasingly competing on more than clubs and late-night entertainment, with affordability, community, music diversity and distinctive local culture helping shape their appeal to residents and visitors.
