Flash floods kill at least two across southern Morocco as roads and vehicles are swept away

At least two people have died as flash floods swept across parts of southern and southeastern Morocco, carrying away vehicles, cutting roads and damaging infrastructure after several days of heavy thunderstorms.

One victim, a mining worker, was swept away Friday while driving a company vehicle near Bleida in Zagora province. Search teams recovered his body Saturday in Foum Zguid, in neighboring Tata province.

A second driver died after floodwaters carried away his vehicle at Oued Ait Saoun, on the road between Ouarzazate and Agdz, according to local reports.

Three foreign tourists were rescued in the Ait Saoun area after their vehicle was swept away while attempting to cross a flooded section of road. Their rescue prompted authorities in Ouarzazate, Zagora and Tinghir to renew warnings against crossing wadis and flooded roads.

The storms have caused wider disruption across the south. Flooding damaged roads, agricultural land and infrastructure in Tata and Taroudant, while the Igherm-Takmout road was among routes cut by rising water. In Tamanart, Tata province, flooding damaged drinking-water infrastructure and other public facilities.

Heavy rainfall also disrupted roads in Al Haouz on Saturday, with flooding, debris and rockfalls affecting several routes, including sections around the Marrakech-Ouarzazate corridor.

Tagounite, in Zagora province, recorded 36 millimeters of rain over 24 hours, the highest total reported by Morocco’s meteorological service for that period.

An orange-level weather warning remains in effect Sunday for Tinghir and Errachidia, where 25 to 40 millimeters of rain are expected through noon, while Figuig could receive 30 to 50 millimeters through 6 p.m.

Authorities have urged residents and travelers to avoid wadis and flooded crossings as further thunderstorms could trigger additional flash flooding.
