Spokesperson for NPP flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Health Committee, Dr Ekua Amoakoh, says she believes Dr Bawumia will eventually become President of Ghana.
She has also warned that it would be unfortunate for young people if the country misses the opportunity to benefit from his leadership.
Speaking in a personality profile interview on JoyNews’ PM Express with Emefa Adeti, Dr Amoakoh expressed confidence in Dr Bawumia’s political future when asked whether she believed he would ever become president.
“I do believe so. And I do believe that it will be very unfortunate for the young people of this country if it misses him,” she said.
Dr Amoakoh also criticised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for what she described as its efforts to portray Dr Bawumia negatively, including branding him a liar.
She argued that political promises should be assessed consistently across parties rather than used selectively to attack opponents.
“You might have heard a lot. You know, the NDC can even go as far as calling him a liar. If we want to call people liars, then we’ll call all of you liars,” she said.
She cited the proposed Hope City project, which former President John Mahama pledged during his first administration, arguing that its non-fulfilment did not automatically make him a liar.
“President Mahama promised to build Hope City in his first administration. He didn’t do it. Now he’s not even mentioning it again. Do I call him a liar for that? No,” she said.
Dr Amoakoh accused the NDC of focusing on issues it could use against Dr Bawumia rather than engaging with his policy proposals and leadership record.
Her remarks reflect the continuing political contest between the NPP and the governing NDC over their respective records and public claims.
Dr Amoakoh said Dr Bawumia demonstrated a strong desire to work and address problems during his time as Vice President.
She argued that his conduct in office suggested he would take a more active approach if elected president and given greater executive authority.
“This is somebody that would have been vice president, and he would be, my own is go to church, go to this mosque, go for this wedding, go for this party, and he’ll be chilling in his office. He didn’t do that. It looked like he was itching to do stuff,” she said.
She added that she expected his leadership to produce a different approach to governance if he became president.
“So you can imagine if he has full control of it. So I always believe that we will probably see something different if we allow Dr Bawumia,” she said.
