Jomo Sono Makes His Feelings Clear Ahead of Pirates vs Chiefs

Jomo Sono Makes His Soweto Derby Prediction as Orlando Pirates Prepare to Face Kaizer Chiefs

Orlando Pirates legend Jomo Sono has added his voice to the growing excitement surrounding the highly anticipated Soweto Derby, making a confident prediction ahead of Saturday’s showdown against Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium.

The former Buccaneers striker, who remains one of the most respected figures in South African football, has attracted attention with his assessment of the eagerly anticipated encounter, describing the expected outcome as ‘obvious’.

The Soweto Derby remains one of the biggest fixtures on the South African football calendar, with millions of supporters following the rivalry between the two Johannesburg giants.

Sono’s connection with Orlando Pirates makes his comments particularly interesting. The football legend enjoyed a successful playing career with the Buccaneers and has never hidden his affection for the club.

His prediction comes at a time when Pirates appear to have the upper hand based on recent performances. Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side have been enjoying an impressive run, winning seven of their previous eight matches across all competitions.

The Buccaneers also strengthened their confidence during the week after recording a convincing 3-0 victory over Milford FC in the Carling Knockout Cup. Tshepang Moremi was among the standout performers, continuing his impressive form ahead of the biggest domestic fixture of the weekend.

Kaizer Chiefs, meanwhile, will be hoping to produce a strong response after experiencing an inconsistent period under head coach Fernando Da Cruz.

Amakhosi received a timely boost after defeating TS Galaxy 3-0 in their midweek cup encounter, with Wandile Duba scoring an impressive hat-trick. The result could provide the confidence the Soweto giants need as they prepare to face their biggest rivals.

Despite their recent struggles, Chiefs cannot be underestimated in this fixture. The Glamour Boys have historically demonstrated their ability to rise to the occasion, regardless of their league position or form heading into the derby.

Sono’s prediction also comes amid growing discussions about which team has the stronger squad and greater experience going into Saturday’s encounter.

Pirates have demonstrated greater consistency this season, while Chiefs will be relying on their determination, attacking quality and the support of their passionate fan base to challenge the defending champions.

The two sides last met in April 2026, playing to a 1-1 draw, meaning both teams will be eager to establish bragging rights when they meet again.

The 186th edition of the famous Soweto Derby is scheduled for Saturday, 31 October, at FNB Stadium, with kick-off set for 15:30.

With legendary figures such as Sono weighing in on the contest, the excitement continues to build. However, the final outcome will ultimately be determined on the pitch, where both teams understand the importance of delivering a memorable performance.

For Pirates, victory would strengthen their position and provide another important moment for their supporters, while Chiefs will be desperate to silence their rivals and make a statement.
