Liverpool and Manchester City booked their places in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals after winning their respective fourth-round ties on penalties on Wednesday.
Liverpool defeated Chelsea 6-5 in a shootout following a 1-1 draw at Anfield, while Manchester City beat Brighton 4-3 on penalties after both sides finished 2-2 at the Etihad Stadium.
At Anfield, Chelsea took the lead in the 40th minute through Morgan Rogers, who converted a penalty, before Cody Gakpo equalised for Liverpool three minutes later, also from the spot.
Neither side could find a winning goal in the second half, forcing the encounter into a penalty shootout.
Both teams converted their opening attempts as the contest extended into sudden death.
Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili saved a penalty from Chelsea debutant Emmanuel Emegha, while Ryan Gravenberch missed for the hosts, allowing Chelsea to remain in contention.
However, Liverpool defender Joe Gomez converted his attempt before Chelsea’s Wesley Fofana blazed his kick over the bar, sealing a 6-5 shootout victory for the hosts.
At the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City twice came from behind to force a shootout against Brighton.
Malick Yalcouyé gave Brighton the lead in the 30th minute before Mateo Kovacic levelled for City 10 minutes later with a low strike from outside the penalty area.
Georginio Rutter restored Brighton’s advantage two minutes after the restart, finishing Jaouen Hadjam’s cross in the 47th minute.
City responded in the 72nd minute when Vitor Reis scored his first goal for the club, turning in Rayan Cherki’s free-kick to make it 2-2.
Neither side found a winner before the final whistle, sending the tie to penalties.
City missed through Kovacic, whose effort was saved by Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele, but Gerónimo Rulli kept the hosts in the contest by saving attempts from Yasin Ayari and Lewis Dunk.
Cherki converted City’s fifth kick before Rulli’s second save secured a 4-3 shootout victory for the holders.
The results sent Liverpool and Manchester City into the quarter-finals, with City continuing their defence of the trophy.
