Police Probe Police Over Millions Of Cedis Maize Deal

The Director General of Police Operations, Commissioner of Police (COP) Mr Emmanuel Teye-Cudjoe, has ordered a thorough investigation to ascertain how investigation linked to maize transaction worth millions of Ghana Cedis got stalled at his unit.

Information available to The Chronicle indicates that about nine months ago, a Beninoi supplied on credit, twenty-one articulated trucks of maize through an Accra based middleman, who has only been identified as Alhaji, to a Ghanaian company.

Credible sources close to the transaction indicated to The Chronicle that the receiving company had long paid the amount to the middleman, to be forwarded to the foreign supplier.

However, the supplier indicated the he never received the money despite several months of demand and excuses from the middleman.

According to the sources, a ‘Good Samaritan’ encountered the frustrated Beninoi supplier at the premises of the buying company and confirmed that payment had indeed been made.

‘The Samaritan’ then set out to trace the said middleman (Alhaji) who had reportedly gone into hiding.

He was allegedly lured with a new business deal and apprehended by the ‘Good Samaritan’ in the vicinity of a mosque while observing prayers.

He was subsequently handed over to a senior officer at the Police Headquarters Operations Unit for further action.

At the Unit, the suspect is alleged to have admitted liability and raised a fraction of the amount with the promise to honour the rest if he was granted bail.

He was subsequently granted Police enquiry bail with surety to refund the outstanding balance within a few days.

Since then, the suspect has allegedly failed to pay the rest of the money. Sources privy to the transaction claim that, the investigator handling the case who had earlier threatened to estreat the bond and arrest the surety is now reportedly tossing and frustrating efforts to retrieve the money.

A source at the Police Headquarters who preferred anonymity told The Chronicle that, the incident occurred at the time the current Director General, Operations, was not incharge of the unit.

However, when the frustrated Beninoi supplier through his assigns reported the matter, COP, Mr Teye-Cudjoe decided to act swiftly by commissioning a probe into how the investigation got stalled after the bail was granted.
